1. Start with your actual catalog
Write down whether you sell a few curated items, many variants, subscriptions or digital products. Check that your theme supports the merchandising and content structure your business needs instead of starting with visual effects.
2. Review the real mobile experience
Open a theme demonstration on a phone. Test navigation, product options, galleries, cart behavior and text readability. Look for appropriately sized touch targets, clear focus and layouts that do not jump or overflow.
3. Assess performance sensibly
Test several representative pages with Lighthouse or PageSpeed Insights. One score never guarantees performance after you add apps and media. Image dimensions, script weight, fonts and third-party integrations all matter.
4. Look for accessible design
Check contrast, keyboard navigation, useful image descriptions, form labels and understandable error messages. Accessibility should be considered through the entire purchasing journey.
5. Try the editor
Can you change hero content, collections, colors and page sections without modifying source files? Good customization tools reduce work when your business evolves.
6. Read licensing and installation documentation
Verify what files you receive, which platforms are supported, whether third-party apps are required and what updates or support are included. Agencies should check usage rights for client projects.
7. Distinguish mockups from shipping features
A polished screenshot is not proof of a working product. Look for a verified feature list and clear release status.
